Based on Sally Benson’s short stories about the turn-of-the-century Smith family of St. Louis, MGM’s charming holiday musical – shot in rich Technicolor – is arguably one of Judy Garland’s finest films. Garland has rarely looked as relaxed or appeared as beguiling on screen; indeed her director, Vincente Minnelli, promptly fell hard for the young starlet and the two married a year later.
In a fine cast that features Mary Astor as the girls’ mother, Mrs Smith, and Marjorie Main as their housekeeper, Kate, six-year-old Margaret O’Brien’s memorable dramatic performance was singled out for a special Oscar, for Outstanding Child Actress.
Musical highlights include 'The Trolley Song', 'The Boy Next Door' and Garland’s sublime version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'.

Meet Me in St. Louis
17 Dec - 24 Dec
Vincente Minnelli’s '40s holiday musical is surely one of Hollywood’s best loved. Set in the lead up to the 1904 St. Louis World Fair, the four Smith sisters – among them seventeen year old Esther (Judy Garland), besotted with the boy next door, and adorable, head-strong Tootie (Margaret O’Brien) – reluctantly face the prospect of moving to New York City.
