Each day after school Toni (Hightower) heads to the local community centre where she works out in the boxing gym that her older brother manages. Dressed in grey gym sweats, she is a textbook tomboy but one day she's drawn into the mysterious world on the other side of the gymnasium doors, where the teenage girls engage in fierce dance battles.
Over time, Toni becomes ensconced in this world, enamoured by the power and confidence of this strong community of young women. As Toni veers evermore into the foreign, primal realm of adolescence she must navigate this unknown land on her own terms.

Premiering at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, Anna Rose Holmer’s feature debut is one of the most captivating films of the year. Brilliantly choreographed by the multi-talented Celia Rowlson Hall and scored by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, The Fits is an atypical coming-of-age tale starring 9-year-old newcomer, Royalty Hightower, who bursts onto screen with more grit, determination and swagger than a Hollywood cowboy.
