Recurrent images of water reflect the themes of doubling, mirroring, blurring and transformation as obsession leads to an enigmatic exchange of personalities. With Janice Rule, Ruth Nelson and John Cromwell.
Presented by the Melbourne Cinémathèque & ACMI
An awkward adolescent (Sissy Spacek) and a lonely outcast (Shelley Duvall) become attached after working at a spa together and then moving in. Inspired by a dream, Altman creates a surreal, dream-like mood of dislocation and anxiety against a decaying American frontier of rundown bars, shooting ranges, mystical murals and soulless desert spa facilities.
