Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s most ambitious work is an elaborately staged yet realistic epic tragedy surveying the final years of the Egyptian Empire in the 11th century BC. The plot centres on the political intrigues surrounding the rise and fall of Ramses XIII, and the challenge to his throne presented by Herihor, High Priest of Amun.

  • Adapted from the famously erudite novel of the same name by Boleslaw Prus, this recently restored and rediscovered film is quickly becoming recognised as one of the director’s masterpieces.
