The second of Ingrid Bergman’s three collaborations with Alfred Hitchcock is not only one of the highpoints of both of their careers but one of the greatest Hollywood films of the 1940s.

  • Bergman stars as the American daughter of a convicted spy who is ‘courted’ by an espionage agent (Cary Grant) to infiltrate a Nazi organisation being established in post-war South America.

A complex, bittersweet, brilliantly constructed and shot romantic thriller, Notorious also represents a peak in studio filmmaking in its use of sets, rear projection, Hollywood stars and Ted Tetzlaff’s wonderfully expressive cinematography. Claude Rains co-stars as the sophisticated organisation leader who Bergman is forced to marry.
