What is surprising is the wealth of rare footage on show, dating back to early Super 8 and 16mm home movie footage. What’s also of particular interest is the growing complexity of the work, most notably of the Muppet feature films and The Dark Crystal.
Overall though, it’s absolutely fascinating to explore the techniques usually kept hidden from audiences. Watching Frank Oz and Jim Henson operate a single puppet with each operating a different hand in ad-libbed appearances is like watching a ballet.
This program is enormously detailed in providing example after example of the science behind the Muppets in-situ. Told with great humour it’s impossible not to be drawn into Henson’s fantastical world – and those of the puppeteers he surrounded himself with.
