Narrated by Spinney himself, the film starts with the discovery of a puppet in a jumble sale to Spinney’s first puppet show and his early work in television with Bozo the Clown. It then follows his move to the happiest street on the planet - Sesame Street.
What we see in between is a wonderful portrait of an artist, performer, puppeteer and filmmaker who’s also a warm and generous human being.
It’s this that gives the film its great warmth and humanity - just what you’d expect from the biggest bird in the world (although we stand to be corrected on that last point).
All is not always what it seems, however, as many challenging and moving moments are related and explained by Spinney’s family, friends and crew.
I Am Big Bird: The Carroll Spinney Story includes interviews with many of Spinney’s collaborators from across his career, including Jim Henson, who stumbled across Spinney while the future Big Bird was undergoing an epic fail in a live show.
From there the rest is history - and boy it’s great to watch.
