Pointedly starring Ingrid Bergman shortly before the end of her marriage to and working relationship with Rossellini, the film makes the intensely personal overtly political whilst also exploring the reconstruction of Germany six years after the director’s Germany Year Zero (1948).

Fear (La Paura)
Though the decor is upper middle class, the emotions are raw, as a man and woman face the dissolution of their marriage. Building on, rather than betraying, his neorealist career, Roberto Rossellini uses melodrama to examine the ‘truth’ of human relationships in this adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s 1925 novel Angst.
