First-time director Maria Visser accompanies Weimans to the north-east Atlantic coast of South America to Saramacca, the village of her father’s birth, where she uncovers more than her family history. Weimans is there, too, for the opening of her retrospective at the Groninger Museum and as she prepares for her latest runway show for Amsterdam Fashion Week.
Weimans’ creations cross the boundaries between architecture, fashion and art and are a breath of fresh air in an overcrowded and often predictable fashion world. Australian premiere! Official selection, Film Festival Rotterdam, 2015.
Screens with Tolga Dilsiz’s mini documentary Around the World with Stella Jean (5 mins, Switzerland, 2014). Haitian-born and Milan-based designer Stella Jean has cleverly combined ethnic prints with the sharpest of Italian tailoring traditions. In this short film, Giorgio Armani throws his support behind this exciting new voice in fashion (along with Vogue’s Mark Holgate, Suzy Menkes and Franca Sozzani) as Simone Cipriani and the Ethical Fashion Initiative of the United Nations International Trade Center connect Stella with traditional weavers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, who ethically produce vibrant fabrics for her original designs.
Presented as part of the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2015
