Sjöström, who died soon after the film was completed, was a major figure in Swedish cinema, an actor-director of the silent era who went to Hollywood and directed the first MGM film (He Who Gets Slapped, 1924) before returning to Sweden.
He was a mentor to Bergman when the young man started his film career, and Bergman repaid him by giving him his finest role.
