Released a few months after The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries established Bergman once and for all as one of the cinema's greatest artists. Isak Borg (Victor Sjöström), an elderly professor, is to be presented with an honorary degree at the University of Lund. During the journey, driven by his daughter-in-law, Marianne (Ingrid Thulin), Borg, who has been troubled by strange dreams, reflects on his past life, on opportunities missed, on love unrequited.

  • Sjöström, who died soon after the film was completed, was a major figure in Swedish cinema, an actor-director of the silent era who went to Hollywood and directed the first MGM film (He Who Gets Slapped, 1924) before returning to Sweden.

He was a mentor to Bergman when the young man started his film career, and Bergman repaid him by giving him his finest role.
