Filled with rich detail and beautifully shot by Sven Nykvist - working on his first film for Bergman - The Virgin Spring was extremely controversial in its day. Here in Australia it was severely abridged by the censors, an act of vandalism that succeeded in diminishing the power of Bergman's message.
Another kind of vandalism occurred in 1972 when Wes Craven remade the basic material (updated to the present) as The Last House on the Left, his first feature.

Bergman returned to the Middle Ages for this bleakly beautiful and disturbing story of violation and vengeance. Max von Sydow plays Tore, a landowner who sends his spoilt, beautiful daughter, Karin (Birgitta Pettersson), to a nearby church to light candles for the Virgin. Along the way Karin is accosted by herdsmen who rape and murder her.
