Bergman continues his exploration with marriage and relationships and all the difficulties and stresses that couples experience. An intimate chamber-piece that can be fittingly described as 'autumnal', it's a showcase for its fine actors and the final statement from one of the world's greatest ever film directors.

After Fanny and Alexander, Bergman's output, all of it made for television, declined dramatically: After the Rehearsal (1983), In the Presence of a Clown (1998) and his final film, Saraband. This is, essentially, a sequel to Scenes from a Marriage (1973) and it reunites the leading characters from that film, Marianne (Liv Ullmann) and Johan (Erland Josephson). They have long since divorced and been out of touch with one another, but Marianne has decided to visit him in his house in a remote part of the Swedish countryside.
