Whilst strolling in the Carpathian Mountains one day, opera singer Count Teleke of Tölökö (Michal Dočolomanský) chances upon a mysterious castle, only to discover that an evil baron (played by Miloš Kopecký) and a mad scientist (Rudolf Hrušínský) have imprisoned a soprano there.
In a film teeming with inventiveness – including an extraordinary proto-cinematic apparatus – there are wonderful props designed and animated by the legendary Surrealist Jan Švankmajer and an atmospheric soundtrack from master composer Luboš Fišer.
