This little known film by Kaneto Shindô is a beautifully shot black and white drama depicting the determination of a mother who survived the Hiroshima A-bomb. Tamiko is a divorced mother struggling to care for her eight-year-old son.

  • Mother is masterfully shot and paints a poignant, at times heart-breaking, portrait of the struggling lower class in post-war Japan.

Mother is screened as part of a free program of classic Japanese films from the Japan Foundation’s collection, this year focusing on the cinema of Kaneto Shindô and Tadashi Imai.
