Hailing from the small coastal town of Kiama, New South Wales, Kelly arrived in New York in the 1920s, befriended a young Cary Grant (then known as Archie Leach) and shortly after made Hollywood his home. He rode the many highs and lows of a career in showbiz, designing costumes for 285 films, sometimes 50 or 60 a year.
Director Gillian Armstrong reteams with her Unfolding Florence: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst writer Katherine Thomson to bring to the screen the life of another great Australian talent. Joining an impressive roll call of Australian contemporary costume designers including Kym Barrett (The Matrix), Michael Wilkinson (American Hustle) and Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby) are many Oscar®-winning and nominated costume designers including Ann Roth (The English Patient), Colleen Atwood (Edward Scissorhands, Big Eyes) and Deborah Nadoolman Landis (Raiders of the Lost Ark), curator of ACMI’s Hollywood Costume exhibition.

He was a favourite of Bette Davis’, had a ball dressing Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame (1958) and made the most of Marilyn Monroe’s assets in Some Like it Hot (1959).
